GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: German research vessel "Sonne". Year of discovery: 2002. History: Ahiparaha is a new Maori word for albacore tuna. It is a cognate of the Hawaiian word for albacore tuna ‘ahipalaha’. A licensed translator of te reo Maori has confirmed the orthography for the new word and the appropriateness of adding a new word for albacore tuna to te reo Maori. Ahiparaha have been found in commercial fish harvests from habitats around other similar features. Although this is not a well fished area, it is likely ahiparaha are present in the water column around and above this feature. |
