GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1999. History: Named after Dr. Kotaro Honda (1870-1954), a world-renown Japanese physicist and material scientist. In 1917, he invented the so-called "KS Steel", a permanent magnetic steel with three times the magnetic resistance of tungsten steel. He further invented the "NKS steel" in 1934, with a magnetic resistance several times higher than that of the "KS Steel". He also developed a portable tide gauge in 1905 for the Japan Hydrographic Department. An improved version, the Japanese standard tide gauge, was made in 1908 and used as part of hydrographic surveys till 1962. This allowed JHD to calculate tidal harmonic constants for many places.
