GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 2001. History: Named after Dr. Toshio Akiyoshi (1889-1947), a Japanese geophysicist. When astronomical almanacs could not be imported into Japan during World War II, he was in charge of developing an astronomical navigation table, which resulted in Japan's own astronomical navigation table (Japanese ephemeris) in 1943.
