Additional information (en): This is a narrow NE trending canyon, located approximately 30 km N of northernmost New Zealand. The name first appeared on Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'North Cape' in 1990. Minimum depth (m): 500. Maximum depth (m): 1850. Total relief (m): 1350. Dimension/size: 20 km x 2 km.

GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in association with Hikurua / de Surville Cliffs on the adjacent mainland. Jean-François-Marie de Surville (1717-1770) was a French merchant captain with the French East India Company who commanded a voyage of exploration to the South Pacific.
