Notes GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery: Discoverer: Brazilian survey vessel "Sirius". Year of discovery: 2011. History: Açu is the name of a coastal city in the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Norte. It is also the name of the most important river in this area. The term "Açu" is a Tupi indigenous word that means big, bigger or huge.

The name first appeared in 2015 in a scientific paper from Almeida, N., Vital, H., and Gomes, M.: "Morphology of submarine canyons along the continental margin of the Potiguar Basin, NE Brazil". Minimum depth (m): 108. Maximum depth (m): 1205. Total relief (m): 1097. Dimension: 1.0 km to 6.2 km width x 14.5 km long.
