GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery: Discoverer: German research vessel "Polarstern". Year of discovery: 2004. History: Named after Umberto Cagni (1863-1932), an Italian marine officer who in 1900 commanded the first Arctic expedition to sail farther north than Nansen.
